The short answer

The federal credit has ended, so the money left comes from individual utilities. Four still pay something: Austin Energy covers half the cost of a qualifying Level 2 station up to $500; CPS Energy pays bill credits for charging at off-peak times; Entergy's eTech program lists $250 per Level 2 port; and SWEPCO sends a $250 gift card for an ENERGY STAR-certified Level 2 station.

The federal credit is gone

IRS, Instructions for Form 8911

“You can’t claim the credit for alternative fuel vehicle refueling property placed in service after June 30, 2026.”

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act moved the end date for the federal charger credit (section 30C) from the end of 2032 to June 30, 2026. A charger installed and working after that date doesn't qualify. Some utility and retailer pages still mention the 30% credit; SWEPCO's rebate page is one of them.

Utility programs

Austin Energy

Austin Energy's home charger rebate covers 50% of the cost, up to $500, for a Level 2 station that works with Power Partner EV, its program for managing when enrolled chargers draw power. You need Austin Energy electric service, a plug-in EV you own or lease, and a new station installed at your address to the electrical codes, with the station and any plug-in receptacle UL, ETL or cETL listed. Apply online after it's installed, with your account number, the station's make and model, your vehicle's VIN and a paid receipt. Many websites still show an older $1,200 cap; Austin Energy's own page says $500.

CPS Energy

CPS Energy doesn't pay toward the charger; it pays you to charge at the right times. EV Smart Rewards, for listed vehicles and chargers, gives a $30 bill credit to enroll and $10 a month for letting an automated schedule shift your charging to low-demand hours. EV Off-Peak Rewards gives $30 and $5 a month for charging off-peak; for chargers that aren't on the list, the monthly credit means limiting charging during weekday peak hours, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., to no more than twice. Over a first year, that's up to $150 or $90.

Entergy Texas

Entergy's eTech program, which pays incentives for electric equipment across Entergy's companies, lists $250 per port for a Level 2 electric vehicle charger and says cash incentives are decided case by case. Contact the program before you buy.

SWEPCO

SWEPCO's rules for Texas and Louisiana pay $250, as a prepaid Visa gift card rather than a bill credit, for an ENERGY STAR-certified Level 2 station at a single-family home you own or rent, up to two per address and never more than the receipt. Apply within 30 days of installation with a receipt dated this year. Funding is limited and first come, first served, and SWEPCO may inspect the installation.

Charging from solar

An EV adds to your yearly electricity use, which changes the solar system you'd size. Two things to keep in mind in Texas. First, evening and overnight charging, which Austin Energy's and CPS Energy's programs reward, happens after panels stop producing. Charging straight from your own panels means charging in daylight, or storing midday power in a battery. Second, how your utility pays for solar you send to the grid decides whether daytime surplus is worth more in the car or on the bill; our buyback guide compares the Texas deals, and our panel guide shows how much use a system can cover.
